At the core of my investigation as a painter is emotional engagement through abstraction. Catching the moment of a situation’s unfolding, the suspension of cognition when feeling and logic are in play. The challenge is to make paintings that are rigorously contemporary while possessing longevity. The space of painting can be at the tip of the brush and the larger cultural arena; it can traverse formal issues and engage the vast scape of painting’s history. It is rich and spectacular as well as personal, difficult and risky. My goal is to locate the site of painting today and work straight into it.
