"My sculptural works are visual explorations of the everyday. Coming to the U.S. as a child and not knowing the English language, visual language became a major tool in my understanding of this new culture. Having prioritized visual language, I saw things in a way they weren’t always intended. These childhood perceptions are instilled in my work today. I use common materials to translate my observations and transform their material function to create a new interpretation of my daily experience."
MiYoung Sohn was born in Busan, South Korea in 1972, and she immigrated to the United States in 1982. Sohn grew up in towns outside of Washington DC until she moved to New York City to attend Parsons School of Design where she received her BFA in Sculpture in 1996, then she received her MFA in Sculpture from Yale University School of Art in New Haven, Connecticut in 1998. Sohn’s work has been exhibited in numerous venues such as the PS1 Contemporary Art Center, CRG Gallery, The Hudson River Museum, and The Bronx Museum of the Arts. She has been awarded with a Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture fellowship, was a fellow for two consecutive years at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and participated in the AIM Program at the Bronx Museum of the Arts and the LMCC Studio Program at the World Trade Center.
