Cheryl Molnar Unnatural Settings
Dec 19 - March 8, 2016
Artist event on February 18, 6-8pm
Gallery Geranmayeh is pleased to present “Unnatural Settings,” a solo exhibition of works by New York based artist Cheryl Molnar. Molnar’s painted collage works investigate man’s alteration and manipulation of nature. By collaging strips of oil-stained paper onto natural birch panels, Molnar crafts fictional landscapes inspired by real settings: botanical gardens, arboretums, state parks and public spaces. Carving architectural elements directly into the wood, Molnar both references and implements the manipula- tion of nature. These paintings leave us considering the permanence of man’s interaction. As the artist herself says, “While man is attracted to the beauty of natural landscapes, as he populates it, he changes it forever.”
Cheryl Molnar is based in Brooklyn, New York, where she has lived and worked for the past thirteen years. Cheryl received a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Pratt Institute. Her work has been exhibited across the U.S. including Smack Mellon in New York, The University of Arizona and The Islip Art Museum on Long Island. Cheryl recently participated in the winter workspace program at Wave Hill in Riverdale, NY and has held residencies at Smack Mellon, Weir Farm Art Center in Wilton, CT and Cooper Union.
